Answers: Your dad might be sleeping and breathing through his mouth all the time.
If he sleeps near his mouth open his mouth will grain dry. Mucus fills his lungs and the gone over ashes that he can't get rid of from smoking are creating this discouraging condition. He probably sleeps with his mouth sympathetic which will dry it out. He probably snores as well. Likely he is experiencing a condition call sleep apnea which means several times during the dark, you actually stop breathing. When he wake up coughing like that, it's usually when they start breathing again and when they huff for air it chokes them and starts a coughing spell.
Smoking will absolutely make it worse, so will person overweight.
Your dad should arrange to go to a sleep disorder clinic to find out how bleak it is because it can be helped.
sounds similar to sinsuses if he is sleeping with his mouth initiate.
