According to Reuters, researchers have found a exotic, and exceedingly painless way to detect bladder cancer within it’s early stages, via a simple urine examination. In an admittedly small study of 218 patients, the new assessment, which looks for traces of the enzyme telomerase, was competent to accurately detect bladder cancer 90% of the time, and was even competent to sniff out low-grade bladder tumors when they were within their earliest stages, presumably making successful treatment a higher possibility. However, the study’s author, Maria Aurora Sanchini, writes —
“It is silly for use in routine screening programs because of the low incidence of bladder cancer, and should be aimed at high-risk sub-groups. Specifically, smokers hold about a three-fold increased risk of developing bladder cancer compared to nonsmokers.”
So if you’re a smoker, first stale, it’s about time to quit…smoking is continually mortal linked to more and more forms of cancer. But even if you do quit, you may want to hold on to up on this story, because if and when the new theory test becomes available, you could do worse than to build it a part of your annual medical screening.
