Transfer of Hospital?
My father is in hospital surrounded by Ilford and my sister lives in Birmingham I live in Yorkshire, dad is recovering from Pneumonia and also is suffering mental condition issues...memory loss. At present he is totally bed bound and receiving physio for help beside walking. We would like him to be transfered to Birmingham as my sister has a disabled daughter to vigilance for too... she has given up her nursing career as we are both spending a week at a time beside my dad. what are the chances of him being transferred. She is hopefully going to speak to the consultant today just about this matter. many gratefulness for any sort of insight into this matter.
Answer: It should be possible but firstly a doctor in Birmingham would hold to agree to take over the care of your father. Second hurdle is the reality that he is not local so his PCT may not agree especially as he was admitted near Pneumonia. The right to choose where you are cared for one and only applies to non emergency admissions.
The most likely route of getting him to birmingham is if he is to be transferred to a nursing home or convalesence home.
No harm in asking and if your dad have memory issues he should have a social worker who may be able to aid if he does not have one ask to see the hospital social workers..
Under the First Choice Initiative, all patients hold the right to be treated in whichever hospital they choose - regardless of where they live. If your father is skilled of consenting himself, then he will need to request the verbs. If he is not; then whoever has power of attorney will entail to make the request.
